The Perfect Picnic Planning Guide

July is National Picnic Month

Picnics are a great way to get away for a day and spend some quality family time while enjoying the great outdoors.

We have a few tips that will make your picnic the “Perfect Picnic”.

Perfect Picnic Place- During hotter months, take a trip up to the mountains and enjoy some cooler weather. During cooler months head to a local park or even your back yard.

Perfect Picnic Meals- For picnics its easy and convenient to pack sandwiches and chips, but if you are looking to add variety and excitement to your picnic try one of these recipes:

  1. Waldorf Salad- fruits, nuts, celery, mayo and spices combine to make a great side dish or a sandwich filler. Serve it on lettuce for a healthier alternative. Recipe from health.com

  5. Peach and Blueberry Cobbler- this lightened up version of traditional cobbler uses whole wheat flour and canola oil, but don’t be fooled it tastes every bit as good as the original. Recipe from eatingwell.com

Perfect Picnic Games-

Frisbee- Play catch or set up some handmade targets and compete for the best aim!

Play tag- Choose someone to be “it” and start running!

Scavenger Hunt- You can plan ahead and print out a list of items to scavenge for or simply make a note on your phone and text each team before you leave. Think of items you might see on your picnic (colored leaves, shaped rocks, sticks, insects, or other things you might see). The first team to collect all of the items and return to the start, wins.

Picnic Blanket Ball- Make use of those picnic blankets. Each team member holds a corner or end of the blanket. Place a ball in the center of the blanket and propel the ball up and out towards the other team’s blanket. The other team must catch the ball in their blanket and return the volley. If a team drops the ball, the other team scores a point. First team to 5 wins.

Perfect Picnic Health and Safety Tips- Safety is a huge concern especially when heading to the mountains for the day.

Pack the first aid essentials-  A basic affordable first aid kit will include much of what you might need for the small cuts, scrapes or insect bites that are common when spending time outdoors.

Don’t go it alone- It’s nice to unplug and be out of cell phone service range, but just make sure you aren’t too far from civilization. If you were to take a nasty fall and have serious injuries, you’d need to be able to reach medical help. If you don’t have cell service, make sure you know where the nearest park ranger station is or make sure other people are around to be able to get help if needed.

Pack your meds- this is especially important for those with asthma and allergies. Pack your inhaler, Benadryl, and Epi pen if you are prone to these kind of reactions.

Whether you drive to the mountains to escape the heat or have a picnic in your back yard, take the time to enjoy your family and surroundings.
