We Steam, Bake and Grill

Success Story: While participating in the 12-week Healthy Hearts Program, the girl in this story dropped her BMI significantly and her lab results no longer show she’s pre-diabetic; AND, she didn’t need to take any medications to accomplish this 

What changes have you/your family made?

We tried to cut out added sugar completely. This means we stopped buying soda, juice drinks, ice cream, and cookies. We also prepare all meals with healthier cooking methods. We steam, bake, and grill instead of frying. Additionally, we’ve incorporated whole grains in the form of whole wheat bread and brown rice instead of white bread and white rice.

Do you think you could have made healthy changes without the support/involvement of your family?


 What advice would you give other families who are also struggling with weight issues?

Give some thought to what you’re feeding your kids. Serve lots of fruits and vegetables to your family. Don’t give them junk food or fried food at home and pack a nutritious lunch for school whenever you can. Make these changes together as a family rather than singling your kids out to do it on their own.

 What advice would you give to other kids who are struggling with their weight?

Get your PARENTS to help out! It’s their job to buy healthier foods and cook nutritious meals for you. Parents, make sure you and your spouse are on the same page because these changes are easier to make if you’re consistent. And, of course, set a good example by eating the same things as your kids.

 What made you/your family decide to finally make healthy changes?

Finding out that our daughter was pre-diabetic, which we discovered by raising our concern about her sudden weight gain to the pediatrician. The pediatrician ordered some lab tests, and we found out she was at risk of developing type II diabetes. It was scary to hear that, so we started making changes immediately. There are relatives with diabetes in our family, so it was healthy for all of us to eat better and exercise more together.

 What else would you like to share about your experience here in the Healthy Hearts Program?

We’re very happy with the program and grateful for the entire HHP team, including the dietitians, exercise physiologists, medical assistants, nurse practitioners, and doctors. Thank you for supporting us!
